1-2-3 To Great Keywords

Keyword research can be a tricky business, trying to figure out if you are going to broad or too narrow, or even if you have really chosen the right keyword for your site.  We know, of course, that it is important to find keywords that have good demand, but for which the competition is not too high.

1.  Determine the seed word for your site.

This is not necessarily going to be a keyword, but the keywords you will eventually choose will be related to this concept, since it is the reason you want people to be attracted to your site. Not much sense finding a wonderful keyword  like “tomatoes” when you sell flowers, is there?  Using one of the many keyword search tools that are available on the web, or the Google AdWords Keyword Tool,
enter your site seed word and sort the results by demand.  Ideally, your word should have a monthly demand of between 300 and 3000.  Supply is your competition, so you want to keep it as low as possible, certainly below 30,000. This main or seed word is going to be the one you will use on your main, or landing page.

2. Pick the ideal keywords for your site.

Next, choose related keywords.  If you are a florist, brainstorming all of the words that come up in a keyword search for florist should give you a decent list of words with good supply-demand ratios. At the same time, you want to eliminate any words that do not relate to your site. If one of the keywords that came up was plants, you will probably want to keep that, but if one of them was cactus, and you do not sell any cacti, it would be wise to eliminate this word. The content you develop for the other pages of your site, tier two pages, will incorporate these other keywords. One of the important things to examine is whether the total demand in the subject is good. Once you have chosen about ten keywords, calculate the total demand for all of them together.  This number should be an aggressive demand number of at least 5,000.

3. Develop related keywords.

If you concentrated on florist or flower, for example, one of the related keywords in that search may have yielded you some interesting topics such as plants or arrangements. Performing a search on these related words will generate a whole new set of spun off words from them.  They do not necessarily have to pass the supply demand tests of your main keyword and your secondary keywords, since they may have lower demand numbers, but may bring in traffic that may end up scrolling around on your site for more information. These will generate content for tier three pages that may not rank well by the engines, but may locate a broader range of traffic looking for more specific things.
The moral is that you cannot be bound by a single keyword, but find many relevant ones, step by step, that you will build you site on.
